A TORQUAY United side containing five Academy scholars, plus two second-half substitutes, could not hold Exeter City at St. James' Park, where the Gulls lost 4-1 in the new Under-21 Premier League Cup this week.
Elliot Benyon, Nathan Craig and Ashley Yeoman were the three over-age pros allowed in the Under-21 line-up, and Benyon scored United's consolation goal in the 66th minute.
But by then the Grecians were already 4-0 up.
Conor Thompson made several good saves in the Gulls' goal as City clinched a second-round tie away to Crystal Palace.
United's side was: Conor Thompson; Mickey Parcell, Jake Hutchings, O'Neill Odofin, Jamie Alexandrou (Sam Chaney 82); Jordan Campbell (Jack Mace 30), Nathan Craig, Danny Sullivan, Courtney Cameron; Elliot Benyon, Ashley Yeoman; subs not used – Kevin McCallion, Chris Coleman, Daniel Lavercombe (gk).
United's Youth team, who lost 2-1 away to Plymouth Argyle in the FL Alliance Cup last weekend, are at home to Exeter City in the same competition this Saturday.
