PLANS to build a new shoe repair shop 'pod' on to Sainsbury's at Torquay's out-of-town shopping centre have attracted criticism.
The superstore at the Willows has applied to Torbay Council to build the new Timpsons concession on to the side of its store.
The chairman of the Torquay Business Improvement District, John Doherty, has objected on the grounds it will drive more people out of the high street.
He said: "Sainsbury's want to fix a pod on to the side of their premises at the Willows.
"This concession will further drain business from an already fragile town centre.
"I object to any further out-of-town retail development, while we have empty shops in our towns, inline with government advice, the Portas Review and the Neighbourhood Plan. The town centre already has two or three small businesses who are providing the same services as Timpsons and this will push them out of business."
The process is going through planning and a date has yet to be fixed for it to be heard.
