TORQUAY United went out of the Johnstones Paint Trophy on penalties after a 0-0 draw with Portsmouth.
The Gulls had fought hard to keep Pompey at bay, with home keeper Martin Rice making one particular brilliant late save.
The closest Torquay came to winning in the 90 minutes was a fierce low shot by Ben Harding that went just wide and a shot by sub Danny Sullivan that was well saved.
Torquay skipper Lee Mansell was the only player to miss the target in the shootout.
