BRIXHAM Town Council has turned down a £20million supermarket plan because of highway fears.
The small authority will now pass on their concerns to Torbay planners before the multi-million-pound scheme is debated next month.
Some 150 residents gathered at Brixham College to make their views known on the mixed-use retail and housing development planned by Albourne Properties and Tesco for the port’s central car park.
An equal number of people spoke in favour and against the regeneration scheme, but the mood of the crowd was definitely against the development.
Following a lengthy debate involving dozens of members of the public and councillors, the authority decided to turn the project down because of traffic and road congestion issues.
A recorded vote saw eight councilors say no and two say yes to the development.
