A FORMER engineer who worked on Spitfire engines during the Second World War has celebrated his 100th birthday.

William Morgan reached his centenary surrounded by his family during a special party at the Bascombe Court Care Home in Brixham where he has been staying for the last five years.

Staff decorated his room and organised a meal for Mr Morgan while his daughter, Angie Cole, her husband Peter and Mr Morgan's granddaughter Sarah Cole and her daughter Ellie Boulton had a private do with him.

Mr Cole, who lives in Stoke Fleming, said: "William is a very straight person. He would say the secret of his long life is never to have smoked nor drunk, to have always put his family first and to have worked hard."

Mr Morgan spent his early years in London and lived through two world wars. He married Eva Lillian known as Peg in the 30s, but she died in 1989.

They had two children, Angie and Christopher, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

After working on Spitfire engines during the Second World War, Mr Morgan was an engineer then a rep working for an electronics company.

He moved to the West Country in the late 1960s with his family and has had links with South Devon ever since.
