BORN June 12, 1819, at Holne on Dartmoor, he became a clergyman, then naturalist and finally an author of famous books like 'Water Babies' and 'Westward Ho'. He mounted a literary campaign against the appalling social injustice of the era. Torbay has two Blue Plaques to honour him and Bideford has a large marble statue of him.
