TORBAY residents are being encouraged to get involved in the Bay's evolving Neighbourhood Planning process.

Communities are seeking to use new neighbourhood planning powers arising from the Government's Localism Act, and to be given the 'green light' to produce Neighbourhood Plans for their local areas.

Torbay Council is currently advertising three individual applications for Neighbourhood Forum and Neighbourhood Area status from communities in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.

The three forums have been taking time to constitute themselves, seeking input from the wider community and developing their plans in conjunction with the drafting of the council's new Local Plan.

The new Local Plan, together with the new Neighbourhood Plans, which will provide detail for local areas, will set out the vision for future development in Torbay and form the basis for deciding planning applications.

Wider public consultation on the new Local Plan and Neighbourhood Planning will get underway next month.

Cllr David Thomas, deputy mayor and executive lead for housing, planning and energy, said: "Torbay Council is fully embracing the concept of localism.

"We are working very closely, in partnership, with the three Neighbourhood Forums in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham and we have fully supported their efforts.

"All three plans will exert considerable influence over, and add detail to, how Torbay develops in the future and they need to be inclusive and representative of the different areas and sections of the community.

"It is important that residents, businesses and other local stakeholders get involved."

The applications from the Neighbourhood Forums can be seen on the Torbay Council website or at the spatial planning office in Roebuck House, Abbey Road, Torquay TQ2 5TF.

Representations must be received by the council by September 7.

Anyone who would like to become involved in the Neighbourhood Planning process in Torbay can log on to www.torbay.gov.uk/neighbourhoodplanning or contact the spatial planning team on 01803 208804 for more information.
