COMMUNITY heroes have officially opened two Co-operative food stores following their refurbishments in Torquay and Chudleigh.

The Chudleigh shop has undergone a £470,000 transformation. Annie Holman, a former member of staff who works tirelessly during retirement to organise the local town carnival, took star status when she cut the ribbon with store manager Matt Hooper.

The Shiphay shop underwent a £432,000 transformation. Chas Deacon, a local vicar who regularly shops at the Cadewell Lane store, took star status when he cut the ribbon with store manager Ben Canning.

Both shops will focus on meal ideas, healthy, fresh foods and essentials.

They both also have a larger in-store bakery and there will be extended ranges of fresh produce, ready meals and pizzas.

The stores will also be the hub of the community, with a calendar board listing local events, and information about how groups can benefit from The Co-operative Membership's Community Fund, which distributes monies to support local good causes.
