Here at The Beresford Clinic Bishopsteignton, Devon we have found a new technique which is helping clients who have scarring, lack of collagen in the skin . This new technique is Micro-needling or more commonly known as derma rolling is a new treatment modality which can be used on many types of skin damage.
The results of this treatment are extremely successful with acne scarring and also have brilliant visual improvements with wrinkles, stretch marks and facial rejuvenation.
Micro-needling-is a drum-shaped roller, studded with approx. 190 very fine needles in eight rows. The depth of the needles can be within a range of 0.5-1.5mm or deeper if used by a professional in a dermatology clinic. The roller can be used vertically, horizontally and also in oblique directions and on average will cause 250 punctures/cm2. Small pinpoints of blood may be seen but this is only superficial and is easily controlled.
Scarred skin lacks in natural collagen and elastin which is seen to be 'sagging' and loose. The derma roller pierces the skin and causes temporary trauma stimulating the skin to regenerate its own collagen and elastin in the areas which are lacking. The effects are seen as the micro needling promotes the skins natural healing process and improve the body's functioning.
This breakthrough treatment was founded in 2006 by Dr Des Fernandes, but did not become recognised in the UK until recently. There are a several different methods of skin needling and rolling is just one of these. DermaStamp and DermaPen are examples of the other methods.
"Even though it's not yet as popular, Collagen induction therapy trumps them all. Also called "Micro-Needling," collagen induction therapy was developed by a pioneering plastic surgeon in South Africa. The skin of the face is coated with liquid vitamins then we utilize a precision roller of ultra-fine micro-needles to pierce the skin into the collagen beneath. This stimulates a cascade of growth that is further invigorated by the vitamins penetrating deep into that layer. The rejuvenating effects are clearly noticeable, fairly long lasting, and free of the pigmentation problems or over-thinning of the skin. This is a technique I can endorse, a very elegant procedure with good science behind it." This is part of an article by James Green, MD
Unlike other facial resurfacing treatments skin needling does not thin the skin nor does it cause pigmentation problems the only down side is the redness and erythema caused after treatment. This only usually lasts for 24 hours. Recent surveys have shown us that the treatment is 'Hardly painful – just a little uncomfortable'.
Benefits: thicker, tighter, smoother skin. In addition to its healing properties skin needling also has benefits for people with skin ageing concerns. Before and after treatment photographs of patient's skin is trusted proof that this treatment improves the appearance of wrinkles, tightening the skin and giving it a youthful glow.
As seen on channel 4's 'How not to get old' derma roller has really become a popular anti-ageing saviour. It was selected as one of three cutting edge anti-ageing gadgets to be tested by celebrity Louise Redknapp. After the 3 week trial she stated "The derma roller definitely works, and I would like to carry on using it."
As well as being a much demanded treatment in Britain, skin needling is widely used and loved in Hollywood too! Used by celebrities preparing their skin for huge red carpet events. The derma roller was claimed to have benefited the Hollywood actress and full time mother to six – Angelina Jolie's skin.
