THE driver of Torbay's CCTV police van has been suspended from driving duties after an embarrassing encounter with a car park barrier.

The driver drove into the 6ft 4ins-high barrier at the Abbey Road entrance of the Lower Union Lane car park in Torquay, damaging the blue flashing lights on top of the van.

Fortunately, the vehicle's expensive camera equipment, which sits on the roof, was not damaged.

A police spokesman said: "There was an incident at the car park where the driver caused damage to the top of the vehicle. The officer misjudged the height of the barrier and hit the lights on the roof.

"It was a low-speed impact but the barrier had to be taken away.

"We've taken action against the driver, who has been suspended from driving.

"Any damage to property does get investigated. The car needed a new set of lights and the barrier replaced. It was an unfortunate incident."

Apparently they tried to catch the offending barrier but it proved to be above the law.
