A FORMER Formula One motor racing caterer has joined Dartmouth Academy in a bid to inspire youngsters to eat healthy food.
Elaine Day (pictured) is the school's new catering manager where she started just a few weeks ago at the Milton Lane site. She will be in charge of providing healthy school meals and eventually the day-to-day running of the Academy's prestigious Rainbow Room restaurant, which will double as the students' place to eat.
The challenge of bringing a new and exciting approach to school catering is what attracted Elaine to the role.
She has been running her own catering business in the South Hams for the last five years, successfully establishing herself as an event and wedding caterer for the local community. Prior to this Elaine travelled the world on the Formula 1 circuit gaining a wealth of experience catering for the likes of Team McLaren or Ferrari and their VIP guests.
She said: "My 10 years in Formula 1 were wonderful. It was exciting, challenging and also gave me the opportunity to sample the foods of various cultures and create my own menus from locally sourced ingredients. I am very excited about bringing my experience and knowledge to the academy table. Being a mother myself I value the importance of a balanced, healthy and affordable diet for growing minds and bodies."
With the combined knowledge and advice of award winning local restaurateur Mitch Tonks, Elaine also hopes to create an exciting commercial restaurant on the site offering affordable healthy and nutritious menus for the local community
She added: "I'm really looking forward to preparing the menu for the children here at Dartmouth in a way I haven't in my career before.
"With great food I believe you can inspire people, young and old, and I believe we can create a culture of good, nutritious, delicious food which people can enjoy here at Dartmouth Academy."
Academy principal Nick Hindmarsh said: "Elaine's experience in catering for high profile, demanding clients and her enthusiasm for creating something truly special here at Dartmouth is very inspiring.
"We look forward to the wonderful menus and opportunities she will help to create for the children and community."
