‘Emergency repairs’ are to be made to the huge crane at the centre of the new Palm Court project after fears it could be in trouble in high winds.
Torbay councils says the crane ‘would be at risk of failure during high winds’ and is to close Torbay Road next weekend for two days to fix the problem.
Torbay Road between The Pavilion and Shedden Hill is expected to be closed from 5am on Friday 30 August until 6am on Sunday 1 September.
A spokesman said that the emergency work was needed, as high winds would put the crane under ‘undue stress’.
Patrick Carney, from the council's Residents and Visitor Services Department, said: "Regrettably we have been left with no option but to close this section of Torbay Road.
"We are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause to road users, who will have to use diversion routes.
"We have been advised by contractors that the crane has developed a fault with its bearings and as a result it is stuck in one position.
"Another very large crane will be brought in and positioned on the road, taking up the whole highway width.
"Engineers will then dismantle the faulty crane and carry out repairs to its base, before placing it back into position on the site.
"It is important these repairs are carried out soon as possible because the fault means the crane would be at risk of failure during high winds.
"Fortunately, the forecast of reasonably settled weather means work can be delayed until after the Bank Holiday weekend.
"Whilst the road must be closed to vehicles, pedestrian access will be maintained and access for metered parking on the seaward side. All businesses will remain open as normal.
"We are giving as much notice of this closure as possible, as we must advise road users to allow a little more time for their journeys along the diversion routes that will be set up and clearly signed."
There will be access for metered parking on the seaward side of the road.
Buses will be via Fleet Street, two-way as normal, but they will be diverted up Abbey Road and down Shedden Hill and back on route and visa versa.
Other traffic will use Babbacombe Road, Windsor Road, Bronshill Road, St Marychurch Road, Castle Circus, Lucius Street, Belgrave Road and back on route and vica versa.
