THE KINGSWEAR Regatta Committee are to stage their 5th Annual Regatta over the weekend of the weekend of July 17 and 18.

This event is by no means new - as the first Kingswear Regatta took place in 1860 but seemed to fade away at the time of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and did not re-appear until 2006.

In the brief four year history of the new Regatta an amazing £16,000 has been raised and distributed to local charities and organisations.

Kingswear Regatta made one of the first major donations to the Dartmouth Inshore Lifeboat Appeal in 2002 – and have subsequently supported other local charities including Devon Air Ambulance, the Froward Point Coast Watch project, Kingswear Rowing Club, Cancer Research, The Friends of St Thomas' Church Kingswear, Dart Sailability, Kingswear Community Primary School, Kingswear Village Hall and the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. All of these are local charities and this is the heart of the this local regatta's ethos.

This year Kingswear Community Primary School will be one of the two major beneficiaries - and they will have their Auction of Promises on Friday July 16 in Kingswear Village Hall.

The Regatta follows with two days of rowing races in Waterhead Creek, as well the Vintage Car and possibly a Motorbike Rally on Saturday July 17. This will be followed by the fete on Jubilee Park on the Sunday. As well as the entertainment, great food and drinks will be available at the regatta. The children will also be entertaining all – not just with their musical and athletic prowess, but no doubt, once again leaving their teachers many lengths behind in the kids vs. teachers rowing races.

Rowing events are open to all and will take place on both days between about 9am and 2pm with events including Men's 2 and 4 Oared, Ladies' 2 and 4 oared, Mixed 2 and 4 oared, Ladies' 50+ 2's and 4's, Men's 50+ 2's and 4's, Men's and Ladies single sculls, Family Races, as well as races for the Kingswear Schoolchildren, under 16s, and under 18s.

There may even be some races you can enter on the day - so go along and have a try. The highlight of the rowing will be the Grand Challenge Race between a Kingswear Regatta Chairman's Crew and their Dartmouth Regatta counterparts. Dartmouth will be trying to reclaim the glory this year.

If you would like to enter a crew in the rowing events, email your entries to kingswearregatta@btinternet.com stating the names of the crew and the race you wish to enter, or phone Chris Ryan on 01803-752837. You can also visit the Regatta website at: www.KingswearRegatta.co.uk for more information.
