THE Gulls went out of the Johnstones Paints Trophy at the first hurdle at Cheltenham.

Although they improved after the break and pulled a goal back, they never recovered from the home side's double first-half strike.

Torquay fell behind after 14 minutes to a goal by Jimmy Spencer, and the lead was doubled for the home side after 42 minutes when Jeff Goulding hit the target.

Gulls boss Martin Ling had made a number of changes for the Johnstones Paints Trophy tie.

However, just as they did at Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday, Torquay rallied after the break.

They pulled a goal back through Lloyd Macklin on the hour.

Torquay lined up Rice; Oastler, Saah, Ellis, Rowe-Turner; McPhee, Mansell, Lathrope, Macklin; Howe, Bodin. Subs Robertson, O'Kane, Halpin, Stevens, Atieno.

Billy Kee gone....Rene Howe out for 'Howe' Long...Ateino yet to reach his potential....Help!!! and behind with the exception of Mansell who is playing out of his skin.....not a lot too offer. Mc Phee is in a different league and still running....Best option must be a series of good draw's and hope for a loan signing or two. Macklin could be the answer up front...he's played there and shown promise. Why didn't anyone go for Gavin Tomlin he must have been in the market at the end of last season and why on earth could we not persuade Jake Robinson to stay. The jury is most positively out on Martin Ling

Never mind, concentrate on the League as we always say. One consolation is that Buckle is doing no better and already they are calling for his head!
