COMMUNICATION has evolved immensely over the last decade, and we are inventing more and more ways to share our ideas.

One of the first infographics dates back to 1786, when William Playfair published The Commercial and Political Atlas, a study of the English economy. Playfair paved the way for visual representations of data.

Infographics are attention grabbing, informative, and appealing. They have rapidly become one of the easiest ways to present complex information, in a visually attractive way.

If you haven't already, it's time to make infographics part of your content marketing strategy. They are ideal for today, when we are overloaded with information daily – newspapers, billboards and of course, the internet.

Infographics shorten large chunks of information and convert them into easily-readable formats perfect for getting your message across. Analyse what your competitors are putting out there. Are they establishing themselves in the world of infographics? If not, it is time to take the lead.

According to studies, in one day we create 1.5 billion pieces of content, in the form of videos, blogs, or even tweets. You need to make your information count. What makes infographics so compelling? Visual marketing is something that we undertake every day. We make our websites aesthetically pleasing to attract more customers, and we do the same with our brand's image. Infographics are no different. The capacity to become viral is much higher than standard text information, especially on social media. Embedding your creation makes sharing easier.

Even if you have little design knowledge, there are many free pieces of software which make creating these easy; infogr.am makes it simple by easy drag-and-drop features, and has a wide variety of graphs, pictorials, and charts to insert.

Piktochart is another free service which is great for creating infographics, and the features are similar to infogr.am. Anything you create must be industry relevant, as this will boost relevant traffic to your site, you'll establish yourself as an expert in your field, and will increase your authority within your industry.

Once you've created something you feel is worth sharing, visual.ly is an online infographic sharing site, where many industries share what they have created.

When done correctly, infographics will be a fundamental part of your campaign. Lastly, don't forget to make sure your image is searchable via Google images. Start slowly and in no time you'll be creating popular and expert infographics.
