YOUR personal details given in the electoral register can be freely sold to companies and organisations, it has been confirmed.
Residents are being urged to make sure that while they are registered to vote, they do not give permission for their personal details to be sold unless they wish to.
Under changes in the voting system those on the electoral register are automatically re-registered. Others may need to make sure they are registered.
Those already on the electoral register do not need to do anything else, unless they have moved house or changed name.
However there are now two registers.
The second is an open register, an extract of the electoral register but not used for elections.
It can be bought by any person, company or organisation.
For example it is used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details.
Residents' names and addresses will be on the open register unless they individually take action and ask for them to be removed.
Removing details from the open register does not affect residents' right to vote.
