JAMIE SPEIGHT believes his opponent may have underestimated him ahead of their clash for the Southern Area super bantamweight title in Southampton tomorrow night.

In a revealing interview, Speight has seized on recent comments made by Jon Fernandes that their fight is merely a 'stepping stone' on the way to British title honours.

Victory tomorrow would make Speight a Southern Area champion in two different weight divisions – something never before achieved by a Devon boxer – and put him in the top 10 in the country.

Yet the 10-round fight is the first at super bantamweight for Speight, who has dropped THREE weight divisions since his IBO International lightweight title defeat to Ben Jones in March.

Speight has also noted that his opponent has never fought beyond six rounds before, while he himself has gone the full 10 rounds three times in his pro career.

He said: "I can't see it being possible that he [Fernandes] has trained as hard as me – I've been in the gym three times a day for six days for the last three months. The weight loss shows that I've been working hard.

"He's never gone above six rounds before. Until you've been there and done it you just don't know what its like to box 10 rounds. It seems like he's completely overlooked me."

Speight has hinted that a move by his sponsor Steve Horn of Tees Events to get into boxing promotions could herald the return of professional shows to South Devon.

But he doesn't believe that being the 'away' fighter tomorrow will harm his chances of gaining a historic win.

"I believe that could be case in an ordinary fight, but this is the Southern Area title so it's going to be legit," he added.

"If anything my fight against Scott Moises [in Plymouth] proves that it can happen.

"When I left the ring I had no marks on me and he had a black eye and broken nose.

"It shows me that you don't have to be the home boy to win."
