KINKS frontman Ray Davies has been teaching budding South Devon musicians how to write songs.

The 60s rock legend was on hand at Dartington Hall as part of the Summer School, to help other musicians create and perform music.

The five-week event has been running at Dartington every summer for 60 years.

Davies, who took part in the London Olympics closing ceremony, was one of 100 artists taking part in this year's Summer School.

Dartington Hall Trust chief executive Vaughan Lindsay said: "Summer School brings together professional and amateur musicians to create and perform music.

"Ray Davies from the Kinks was here to teach participants how to write songs."

Mr Lindsay said that throughout the five-week event three concerts a day had been performed and 40 courses had been available to participants.

He added: "This year we decided to offer greater opportunities for local residents to get involved.

"We also had an impromptu concert at a care home in South Brent and organised another in Market Square in Totnes.

"It has been very successful."
