HM COASTGUARD was called when a paddleboarder was spotted in apparent difficulty a mile off Goodrington Sands, Paignton, on Saturday afternoon.

A spokesman for the coastguard said: “We received a call at 3.44pm about a paddleboarder struggling to get back to the beach. There was a strong westerly wind blowing him offshore. However, he got back to shore unaided just as the lifeboat arrived.”

Teignmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and Teignmouth RNLI lifeboat were sent to reports of a child in the water off Flow Point, River Teign, at 1.59pm on Saturday.

The coastguard spokesman said: “A nine-year-old boy was being washed down the river after his dinghy capsized and he was separated from it.

“The local yacht club saw he was in difficulty and took him ashore. The teams checked on his welfare and provided safety advice. He didn’t require medical attention.”
