TORQUAY couple John and Rosetta Hills celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Friday.

The couple, from Plainmoor, met in 1959 at the chapel in Ellacombe and married five years later at Torre Gospel Hall.

John, 74, began his career as a gardener and went on to spend 30 years with Torbay Council's highways and car parking department.

Rosetta, 71, continues to work part-time as a care assistant and has previously worked in the seasonal shops at Cockington.

The couple have three children, Ian, Mark and Ruth, and 12 grandchildren Adam, Zoe, Luke, Jake, Tanya, Jade, Joshua, Bronwyn, Simion, Kian and twins Rhiannon and Ewan.

The couple enjoy days out to National Trust properties and photography.

They are active members of the Hebren Gospel Hall church in Barton Hill Road.

And the secret to a long and happy marriage?

"You learn to compromise and to give and take. People who say they've never had a cross word are lying," Rosetta joked.
