Fit-again defender Aaron Downes marked his comeback with a first-half goal and loan striker Paul McCallum scored twice as Torquay United ended a six-match winless run with a key victory over Bury at Gigg Lane.
In horrendous conditions - pouring rain was accompanied by thunder and lightning in the second half - United stood up to often mountainous pressure, with Downes and fellow centre-back Anthony O'Connor outstanding.
Downes, playing only 26 days after a cartilage operation, headed United in front from Kevin Nicholson's corner in the 18th minute.
And, after Nathan Cameron equalised for the Shakers six minutes later, it was another Nicholson corner which set up McCallum for another header in the 29th minute.
A brilliant save by Martin Rice from Cameron just after half-time helped the Gulls to stay in front, before McCallum thumped a right-foot shot into the top right-hand corner from Elliot Benyon's cross after 56 minutes.
It was also a great result for Gulls boss Alan Knill, who was returning to the club he left in 2011.
