A MAN aged in his 60s has fallen from the sea wall at Dawlish.

Ambulance, HM Coastguard and the Devon Air Ambulance were sent to scene just after 1pm on Friday.

It happened about a quarter of a mile from where Prime Minister David Cameron and hundreds of people had earlier gathered to officially re-open the section of rail line damaged in the storms.

A coastguard spokesman said the man had been fortunate to escape serious injury.

"He fell about 16ft," the spokesman said.

"There was a bit of water but he just stood up and walked back on his own.

"It happened on the opposite side of the railway station from where the re-opening ceremony had taken place."

The casualty was checked by paramedics and taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital by land ambulance.
