FASHION chain Monsoon has confirmed it is closing its Torquay store.

The lease has expired on its shop at the front of Union Square just as the company is being restructured.

A company spokesman said: "After further consideration, Monsoon has decided to go ahead and close its Torquay store.

"The store is closing on January 21 because the lease has expired.

"Where possible, staff have been relocated to our nearby stores in Exeter and the Accessorize store in Plymouth."

Phil Chapman, centre director of Union Square, said: "Had the lease not expired I think they would have remained in Torquay as they have traded quite well over the last 15 years.

"The closure in Torquay is down to current economics and a review of their retail strategy. we are caught out by the timing of the expiry, usually at this point they would modernise or refit the shop having extended the lease term.

"Closing the shop is the easiest option at this point in time, my view is that they should not take a short term view as the town is to improve over the next few years."

It is understood four staff are affected.

I'm sorry Monsoon is closing. It's a decent shop selling quality items.

Of course shops such as monsoon and watrestones are leaving Torquay. They serve the educated middle class, in Torquay you only have the uneducated unemployed class now.

In fact we should follow in the trend that is devons way of thinking. Just like the bypass we should debate it for 50yrs before someone lifts a finger to save torbay. :-)
