SOUTH Devon AC's 2014 senior grand prix continued with a mile race around Paignton's North Green last Thursday.
In superb conditions, 27 runners produced twelve personal best times and one new club record.
The A race set off first. Dave Hampton attacked the race from the start. He gradually built up a significant lead and, with a final effort on the home straight, smashed his pb to win, squeezing inside the five minute barrier in 4 minutes 59 seconds.
New member Martin Prosser clinched 2nd place with a determined run in 5:18, as Vince Langdon improved his pb to 5:20 in 3rd, followed by (4th) Frank Reay 5:22, (5th) Doug Veitch 5:23, (6th) Ryan Rudge 5:26 pb, (7th) Jerry Hocking 5:27pb, (8th) Rob Leeke 5:28 and (9th) Marc Walpot 5:38 pb.
The B race was a much closer contest and was only decided in the finishing straight. Zach Ardino timed his run well and took 1st place in 5:38.
Second place went to Michelle Moore who was 1st lady and set a new SDAC female club record with a pb of 5:40 – nine seconds faster than the previous record set by Amanda Wallace in 2005.
Naomi Flanagan took 3rd place with a pb of 5.46, ahead of (4th) Marc Jones 5:53 pb, (5th) Rory Treharne 6:12, (6th) George Holman 6:18, (7th) Val McClean 6:40 pb, (8th) Sasha Stubbs 6:42, (9th) Kerry Bell 6:45 pb and (10th) Sue Hayes 6:47 pb.
The C race saw a gun to tape victory as John Drennan motored round in 7:09, with Roger Webb (2nd) in 7:12 and a fast finishing Mark Holman (3rd) in 7.17, followed by (4th) John Barrett 7:25, (5th) Steve Waddington 7:35 pb, (6th) Tracey Elford 7:39, (7th) Sharon Pascoe 7:41 and (8th) Heather Coverdale 7:48. The runners' £2 entry fees were added to the pot for this year's SDAC Chairman's Charity, The Williams Foundation.
THERE was a trophy for Dave Naish from SDAC for 1st Male Vet 60 in the Honiton Hippo on Sunday. This is a hilly, mostly off road race with several river crossings. Naish finished 52nd with a time of 1:11:27, ahead of (61st) Yvette Smith (1:13:22) and (92nd) Roger Webb (1:20:53).
THE Taunton Marathon, also on Sunday, had three South Devon athletes competing. Garry Hooker stormed home in 18th position and in 3:10:22, followed by (103rd) Marc Jones (3:50:30 – a pb by 12.5 mins) and (110th) Ryan Rudge (3:54:46).
THREE SDAC runners will be pounding the streets of London for 26.2 miles on Sunday, April 13. Naomi Flanagan, Vince Langdon and Heather Coverdale. Heather won a coveted place in the club ballot and is running to raise money for cancer research.
