SOUTH Devon AC's 2014 senior grand prix continued with a mile race around Paignton's North Green last Thursday.

In superb conditions, 27 runners produced twelve personal best times and one new club record.

The A race set off first. Dave Hampton attacked the race from the start. He gradually built up a significant lead and, with a final effort on the home straight, smashed his pb to win, squeezing inside the five minute barrier in 4 minutes 59 seconds.

New member Martin Prosser clinched 2nd place with a determined run in 5:18, as Vince Langdon improved his pb to 5:20 in 3rd, followed by (4th) Frank Reay 5:22, (5th) Doug Veitch 5:23, (6th) Ryan Rudge 5:26 pb, (7th) Jerry Hocking 5:27pb, (8th) Rob Leeke 5:28 and (9th) Marc Walpot 5:38 pb.

The B race was a much closer contest and was only decided in the finishing straight. Zach Ardino timed his run well and took 1st place in 5:38.

Second place went to Michelle Moore who was 1st lady and set a new SDAC female club record with a pb of 5:40 – nine seconds faster than the previous record set by Amanda Wallace in 2005.

THE Taunton Marathon, also on Sunday, had three South Devon athletes competing. Garry Hooker stormed home in 18th position and in 3:10:22, followed by (103rd) Marc Jones (3:50:30 – a pb by 12.5 mins) and (110th) Ryan Rudge (3:54:46).
