FILM star Viggo Mortensen has lent his support to a charity seed mix to help young footballers.

The star, best known for playing Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, was happy to endorse the petunia mix when approached by Francijn Suermondt from Suttons Seeds, based in Paignton.

The film fan slipped the actor her card with a scribbled note of her request when she met him at the BFI film festival in London last year.

To her surprise, he wrote back and at this year's festival she was able to present him with a promo packet.

The seeds are called Petunia 'CASLA mix' named after Club Atletico San Lorenzo De Almagro — Viggo's favourite football team when he was growing up in Argentina.

It is hoped the seeds will go on sale next year with proceeds helping youth football teams in Devon.

Fran said: "Viggo came out of the green room to meet me and shook my hand and said he was glad to meet at last.

"I told him that all proceeds would go towards helping selected local youth football teams in Devon that need help buying things like football strips and that, ultimately, I would somehow like to twin a team with one in Argentina thinking this would be a really interesting project.

"He thanked me very much for the gift of the seeds as his birthday was the same day.

"I hope to be able to share how the project is going with him in the future — even his friend tweeted me after the event to say what a good idea she and the film's director thought the seeds were."

The actor has since written all about the seeds and Suttons in his column on the San Lorenzo website.

Fran went to the film festival to see Viggo's latest film Everybody Has A Plan.

She says that his dual role in the sub-titled Argentinean film noir is his best yet.

Reviewing the film, Fran said: "Everybody Has A Plan has a fine cast, including the location, intensely atmospheric, the forbidding yet sadly beautiful waters of the Tigre Delta in Argentina provide a deeply menacing back drop to the story.

"Mortensen plays the dual roles of Agustin and Pedro, twin brothers who grew up on the Delta but went very different routes in life into adulthood.

"Agustin (a doctor in Buenos Aires) is suffering what seems to be a mid-life crisis, he feels trapped by a wife who is desperate to adopt a baby, and he ultimately starts sinking into a depression.

"Pedro on the other hand has remained on the Delta and spends his life tending bees and making honey. But he also has a much darker side.

Fran said: "The outcome is surprising in the fact that although these brothers are twins, almost a third materialises in the form of Agustin trying to become, but never quite succeeding as Pedro and those around him slowly realise all is not as it seems."
