A CHARITY football game in Newton Abbot raised more than £2,000 for Cancer Research UK on Friday night.

Friends and family of the late John Drinkwater came together to play in a memorial match at the Recreational Trust to mark 10 years since he passed away.

John, who died of a brain tumour, was well respected in the town for his dedication to the sport as a player, coach and referee.

He had strong connections with Newton United, Newton Spurs and Buckland Athletic. His family also managed to get various businesses to donate raffle prizes.

"We are so grateful to everyone who came along," said Faye Drinkwater, John's daughter.

"We know we've collected more than £2,000 through the just giving website page, donations and the raffle."
