Spinning Wheel, Paignton
YOU can't say they didn't warn you.
The Nightporters said it would be best to turn up early for their final gig at the Spinny, because they were anticipating a big crowd.
And so it proved, with the cramped dancefloor, alcoves, bars and balcony all packed to hear the music and enjoy the visceral thrills of rhythm and blues.
The gig came at the end of a triumphant European tour and was billed as the band's last ever, with bass player Chris Robbins-Davey heading home to Australia immediately afterwards. The Spinny was an ideal venue for the band, with the audience within touching distance and no room to manoeuvre.
They played a two-part set packed with songs from their current 'Very Best Of...' compilation CD, and were tight and businesslike as ever.
Fans had come from Belgium and Essex to see them, and weren't disappointed.
The Nightporters will be sadly missed, but those who turned out to see them at the Spinny at least had one last chance to see them at their very best.
