OVER 50 local businesses heard about business opportunities in the low carbon sector as part of the Torbay Business Festival - part of South Devon Enterprise Week.

The event, held at the South West Energy Centre in Long Road, Paignton, was a chance for local businesses to see what the centre, can offer them.

European Regional Development Funding enables the Centre to give free advice and guidance on linking to major low carbon projects, the latest building services and renewables training, energy audits and diversifying into the low carbon sector, as well as using renewables and energy saving measures to reduce energy bills for businesses and inviduals.

Energy Centre director Patrick McNevin discussed opportunities for businesses with upcoming low carbon projects in the area, such as Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station at Bridgwater in Somerset, Navitus Bay Wind Farm off the Dorset coast, the Green Deal government initiative and the SMART metering roll out all of which are predicted to create 22,000 jobs in the South West.

The event was very popular; there are great prospects for local businesses in this growing sector, including boiler installation, building treatments and SMART meter installation using the Centre’s strong connections with Schneider Electric, Worcester Bosch, Climate Energy, Parex, Devon ECO and Wales and West Utilities.

The Energy Centre provided a tour both of the award winning Centre itself, and also the innovative Passivhaus, which is provoking considerable interest from community groups, schools, businesses and individuals. Tours can be arranged by ringing 01803 540725 or emailing info@southwestenergycentre.com.

The next Energy Centre event is a free ‘Increasing Your Profits through Renewables’ seminar day open to businesses in the South West on December 5 from 9.45am to 12.30pm. To register, or to find out what the Energy Centre is all about, ring 01803 540725 or email info@southdevon.ac.uk.
