THERE were nearly twice as many teams as last year in this year’s River Dart Raft Race.
The event on Sunday, also known as the River Dart Struggle, involved more than 175 paddlers in 33 teams.
The two to 10-man teams paddled their homemade rafts 13km from Dart Meadow, Buckfastleigh, to Vire Island, Totnes.
The event was organised by the Rotary Club of Totnes and has raised £6,920 for local good causes so far, with sponsorship still pouring in.
Peter Thornhill, from the organising committee, said: “It went exceptionally well. The conditions were perfect and everyone enjoyed themselves, even though one team’s raft flipped straight over and one raft broke in two.
“The fastest team took around two hours 15 minutes to complete the course.
“Last year we had 18 teams. Next year, with more publicity in advance, we think we could easily get 100 rafts.”
