Plans for modern annexe at Babbacombe beach hotel go out for consultation

PLANS to create a modern annexe for Cary Arms Hotel guests within a clutch of traditional cottages on Babbacombe beach are out for consultation.

The de Savary family, which owns the upmarket inn and nearby cottages in Torquay, plans to demolish an eyesore garage near Rose Cottage and in its place create a modern, one-bedroom annexe with sea views.

It will have a curved zinc roof and hardwood cladding with a terrace looking out to sea.

The owners say it will enhance the type of accommodation the holiday spot —voted one of the best British beachside hotels — can offer.

Ian Solkin, managing director of Havana West, de Savary's hotel development company, said five-bedroomed Rose Cottage had proved to be very popular this summer with guests wanting a week's holiday.

He said: "This is about providing extra accommodation which may be for families who want to bring their grandparents or other family members.

"It is a further investment in Babbacombe."

He said the holiday letting properties are an important part of the overall vision for the Cary Arms.

The vision also includes plans for additional rooms at the hotel, residential units at the nearby Glen Hotel site and development of the cafe and flats at the beach car park..

Mr Solkin said it was hoped to bring these plans to fruition 'sooner rather than later'.

The Cary Arms already provides accommodation at Rose, Beach, Shell and Pebble Cottages.

The plans form part of a planning application submitted to Torbay Council.

Residents can have their say on the plans until November 21.

The proposals fall within a conservation area and thatched Rose Cottage was grade II listed in 1952.

A concerned resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I don't think anyone objects to something being built there, but we would prefer something more in keeping with the area.

"No one wants a bunion there. It is such an idyllic place and I would rather it stayed that way."

The applicant stated the annexe is less imposing than earlier approved plans to create a thatched annexe and garage on the site.
