IN A simple but poignant service held within the ruins of Holy Trinity Church, Buckfastleigh, the communities of Buckfastleigh and Buckfast remembered the outbreak of the First World War and re-dedicated the refurbished War Memorial.

Residents, councillors, the Abbot of the Buckfast Community, members of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and Devon and Cornwall Constabulary joined together in a service led by the Rev George Day, which included readings and music..

Following the service the congregation processed to the war memorial for a short service of re-dedication and wreath laying.

The service ended with Jean Hart playing a single piper's lament.
