POLICE are hunting the driver of a car who fled the scene after a head-on collision in Torquay.

One man required surgery for a fractured hip after the Rover collided with a Nissan Note on Barton Hill Way.

A full scale search of the Barton area was launched by police on the ground and the force helicopter for the Rover driver.

Police have now launched an appeal to trace him. He is believed to be aged in his mid 20s or 30s, about 6ft tall and of slim build.

He has short ginger or brown hair and was wearing a quilted black jacket and blue jeans. He ran off in the direction of the nearby GP surgery.

Police have confirmed three men were in the grey Rover ZR MG when it crashed. Two stayed at the scene.

Three ambulances were sent and the two men, believed to be from the Liverpool area, were taken to Torbay Hospital where one of them had surgery on his hip.

The red Nissan Note was being driven by a middle aged couple who suffered superficial injuries and did not need to be taken to hospital.

The driver of the Rover was not the registered owner of the car.

The incident happened on Friday, November 8, at 1pm.

The Rover hit other nearby vehicles before it crashed.

A police spokesman said: "Any witnesses who either saw the collision or noticed a grey Rover ZR MG, registration number WF03 LTZ, driving in the Willows area of Torquay, are asked to contact Newton Abbot serious collisions investigation unit quoting reference 351 of 9 November 2012."
