CHURSTON'S Rob Butterworth said carding a 79 in his own professional's day competition has left him out pocket – but many members happily in credit.
Butterworth offers members several no-lose gambles in his annual event, with players who deposit cash into their pro shop accounts able to double it by beating his score.
Entrants to this year's competition were also able to double their money if they took part in the 17th hole challenge – by hitting the green with their tee shot.
Butterworth said his 79 in this year's event meant anyone carding a nett 78 or better would have their money doubled – which would have applied to 90 per cent of the field.
The professional said he was at least thankful that a stiff breeze made hitting the 17th green difficult, with only around 30 per cent of entrants on target.
"I haven't worked out this year's figures, so I don't have an exact total," he said.
"Plus it depends on what the members spend their money on in the shop.
"We don't physically hand out any money, as it all goes on their pro shop accounts.
"But let's just say that I made a lot of members very happy that day!"
Butterworth's pride was slightly dented as no fewer than three members predicted his 79 in the 'Guess the Pro's Score' competition – but said he could have no complaints about correct guesses!
Rob Skornia, Andy Bullan and Rob Broxton all made the prediction to win £31 on their pro shop accounts. And he added: "As long as I don't shoot 79 every year I should be fine – otherwise I will go out of business!"
First prize overall went to Brian Harland who also carded a 79 – off a handicap of 16 – to come in with a nett 63. He won a Taylor Made RBZ Driver in addition to the Professional's Trophy.
Second was Pete Roberts (75-9-66) who took home a Motocaddy push trolley, while Jim Pettigrew was third with a gross 79, nett 68.
