SALCOMBE'S lifeboat was launched early on Sunday morning to help a Brixham-based fishing boat off the South Devon coast.

Brixham Coastguard requested the launch of the Salcombe RNLI all-weather lifeboat at 07.21am after the fishing boat fouled its propeller 14 miles south of Salcombe harbour.

In bright, sunny weather the volunteer crew launched The Baltic Exchange III to assist the 10-metre Padstow registered fishing vessel Fiona Mary (PW160) which works out of Brixham.

After repeated attempts to dislodge the net from its propeller by the fishing boat crew, the Salcombe lifeboat arrived on scene at 8.15am and passed a tow line across and started to tow her back towards to Salcombe.

Once back inside the harbour, the Fiona Mary was taken around to the fish quay where she was going to be dried out on the slipway so the net could be cleared.

The Salcombe all-weather lifeboat returned its mooring at 11.10am.
