A 51-year-old ship’s captain has been charged with being drunk in charge of a vessel at Teignmouth.

Police were called to the harbour at around 6.30pm on Saturday as The Sandetti was preparing to leave.

The captain of the vessel, Gert Kolkman, failed a breath test and was arrested by officers.

He has since been charged with the offence of being the professional master of a ship whilst over the prescribed limit.

Mr Kolkman, from Horlingen, was due to appear before Torquay Magistrates this morning.

The Sandetti, which measures nearly 90 metres in length and when full weighs just under 3,000 tonnes, arrived at the South Devon port from Brunsbüttel in northern Germany on December 12.

Its cargo is not known, but it was due to sail to the Netherlands.
