Our business awards short-list gives judges tough task

THE short-listed companies for the Herald Express South Devon Business Excellence Awards 2014 have been announced.

The judges faced some tough decisions, with more than 100 entries received.

The winners will be announced at the glittering awards ceremony on Friday, March 14, at the Riviera International Conference Centre in Torquay.

With great entertainment, an impressive menu with locally-sourced food and a few surprises along the way, the evening is destined to be a memorable night.

The awards are designed to showcase the wealth of talent, entrepreneurship and drive in South Devon, much of which goes unsung.

There were a huge range of entries this year, from businesses started in garages and bedrooms to those exporting to dozens of countries around the world with multi-million pound turnover.

Most Innovative Company Award: Getclobbered Couture Accessories, The Potted Fish Company, The Silvalea Group, Westcountry Direct Ltd.

Best New Business Award: eKonomical, Les Fleurs Florist and Giftshop, Novahomes Torbay, Reboot.

Best Green Business Award: Compton Pool Farm, Dartmoor Chilli Farm, Pennywell Farm, River Dart Country Park and Holne Park House.

Best in Customer Service Award: Beverley Holidays, Buckland Tout-Saints Hotel, Finlake Holiday Park, Specsavers Teignmouth.

Best Sales and Marketing: AC Print Ltd, Bays Brewery, Devon Air Ambulance Trust, Fairford Electronics.

Best Social Enterprise/Community Impact Award: Dame Hannah Rogers Trust, Fermoys Garden Centre, ROC (Robert Owen Communities), Social Fabric.

Business Growth Award: eKonomical, Hallett's the Bakers Ltd, The Silvalea Group, Williams Hedge Estate Agents.

Best Tourism and Leisure Award: Beverley Holidays, Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company, Finlake Holiday Park, River Dart Country Park and Holne Park House.

Young Entrepreneur: Becky Tapper, Les Fleurs Florist & Giftshop, Debbie Thorpe, The Chelston Well-being Centre, Jonathan Bailey, The Potted Fish Company, Miles Leeson, Peak Performance Fitness Centres.

Business Enabler of the Year Award: Nutshellaw Torbay and South Devon, Outset Torbay, The Cary Arms.

Exporter of the Year: Business English Consulting Service Ltd, Fairford Electronics, Scarlett Entertainment, The Silvalea Group.

The judging panel was made up of: Judges chairman Angela George, Director of IMS Marketing; James Cross, managing partner of Kitsons LLP; Andrew Dean, director of development at Hannah's; Sue Cheriton, executive head of residents and visitor services at Torbay Council; Tina Crowson, chief reporter at the Herald Express; and Carl Wyard, urban enterprise co-ordinator at Torbay Development Agency.
