AFTER her nieces needed neonatal care, Katie Webber was spurred on to raise money for the hospital that helped look after them.

Katie, 35, from Marldon, took part in the 10k Dart open water swim to raise funds for the Royal Devon and Exeter neonatal unit.

Her nieces, Hetty and Eliza Watson, had to receive treatment at the unit after they were born in 2009.

Hetty and Eliza, along with their mum Claire from Highweek and other relatives, were on hand to cheer Katie on.

She said: "It was better than I thought it was going to be but a bit cold. The swim was really beautil and amazing along the river. It took me nearly four hours but it seemed shorter.

"I will have raised £2,000 which is fantastic. I only learnt front crawl this year and I did it all the way so it was a great challenge. It was a long way."

The swim, organised by the Outdoor Swimming Society, saw hundreds of competitors take part in the event between Totnes and Dittisham.
