A TOP South Devon Tory has defected to the UK Independence Party.

Teignbridge district and Teignmouth town councillor James McMurray (pictured) has been a Conservative Party member since he was 16.

The former Teignmouth mayor, who represents the central Teignmouth ward, handed in his resignation letter on Tuesday.

He has joined UKIP after deciding to vote for them in the European elections on May 22.

He said: "This was not a decision which was taken lightly. "However, I have become increasingly disillusioned with a party which does so little to support the aspirations of working families."

Newton Abbot Tory MP Anne Marie Morris said: "It is regrettable Cllr McMurray has made this decision.

"This is a time when we must all focus on what is best for the long-term future and prosperity of Teignbridge and the hard working people and their families who live here."

A UKIP spokesman said: "This is another sign of UKIP's progress across the country."

One councillor will not replace the many people who will no longer support UKIP after the racist comments by that UKIP person about comedian Lenny Henry. Two people who i know have said they will no longer support them and one has torn up his membership card.

Pit2014, are you quite sure that UKIP will not finnish the General Election without a single seat in Westminster...........or are you just wildly hoping they don't.........much like the three main parties. Let's take Eadtleigh as an example. The By-Election was called at short notice in a strong, grass roots Liberal Democrat held town where the postal vote was easily canvased previously by the Libs. Had UKIP been able to canvas that postal vote there is no doubt Diane James, of UKIP, would have been returned. Have you thought about where Mr Farage may stand.....surely a decent bet for a parliamenrty seat? I could name half a dozen more very likely and very able candidates who may be elected next year for UKIP. So when you flipantly disregsrd UKIP's chances next year in the General Election................think again. You are not factoring that UKIP are the fastest growing political party, or the growing discontent with the Westminster Vilage and the ongoing sleaze that inhabits it. Give these considerations some more thought and you may well be surprised!

Congratulations James on joining the 'Common Sense Party', or as Nigel likes to say, 'The People's Army'! We at Worthing West UKIP were very grateful when ex Worthing Mayor & previously stalwart Conservative, Charles James & his wife Pauline came over to us. They have been a real asset to us in our local ellection campaign - that kind of experience is priceless. I am sure you will add a great deal to your local party & I know they will be grateful & all the richer for your envolvement. Good luck James & all the best from Worthing UKIP
