IT was a great start to the rowing season for the River Teign Rowing Club Gig Section.

Three teams were entered at the first Pilot Gig Regatta of the season and came eighth overall out of a field of more than 50 in the Three Rivers Race hosted by Caradon Gig Club of Saltash.

“The six mile course, possibly the longest of the season, was a good test for all crews involved,” said Jon Haytread.

“First off were the ladies in good conditions, fairly calm and warm spring sunshine.”

The highly rated Ladies A crew of Sandra McCord, Rachel Cooper, Sarah Free, Catherine Lovell, Sue Heath and stroke Jane Avery powered through the water, superbly coxed by Andy Forte, finishing 10th out of a field of 53, in a time of 54 mins 50 secs.

“It was a great result,” Jon said. The Ladies B crew of Lyn Ware, Jacky Forte, Sarah Cox, Kate Rew, Lisa Pash and stroke Lisa Laxton finishing 23rd.

“It was a great result for this team who were well-coxed by Rupert Holliday,” Jon said. River Teign men entered a men’s A crew of Mike Izzard, Andy Burfit, Big Mark Oswald, Captain Dave Johnson, Martyn Laxton, stroke Rupert Holliday and cox Andy Forte.

They finished a very creditable 17th out of a fleet of 51, in a time of 49 mins 51 secs.
