THE thatched roof on a grade 11 listed property in Broadhempston has collapsed in a fire involving crews from across South Devon
Eleven fire appliances, including the aerial platform from Torquay were called to Hunters Lodge in the village at just after 2pm.
Smoke is still billowing from the roof but firecrews say the fire is now under control.
Eight pumping appliances from Totnes, Newton Abbot, Buckfastleigh, Ashburton and Torquay with the Incident Command Unit from Totnes, Aerial Ladder Platform and Water Foam Carrier from Torquay are on scene.
Group manager Nick Jones said it was quickly apparent on arrival that a serious fire was developing and crews immediately attacked the blaze.
The owner of the house was not inside at the time and nobody has been injured.
Heavy smoke is still billowing from the roof and crews are using foam to put the fire out.
They are expected to stay at the scene for several hours to manage the collapse of the thatched roof.
Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used
compressed air foam jets and two hose reels.
Fire has spread to parts of the first floor.
