YMCA Torbay Tigers U14s basketball team lost both games in a double header on Sunday at Deerpark College Cirencester in the U14 South West Regional League.
The Tigers, in their first games of the new year, played Stroud Sharks and hosts Gloucester Jets. They first took on the unbeaten Sharks in what proved to be a tough but well-contested game that was even until the final quarter.
The Tigers were ahead in the first quarter by two points and the scores were all square at the end of the third quarter. But with a time out and a change of tactics the Sharks stopped the supply to the Tigers' offence and took full advantage of the Tigers lack of playing time.
In the final quarter the Sharks used their experience and physical presence, making the most of the Tigers' defensive errors and cutting loose, running out winners by 39-28.
Following a ten minute interval, Tigers then played hosts Gloucester Jets who were after revenge for their defeat against Tigers at the recent first leg fixture at Churston.
The Tigers were never in the game, and the Jets took full advantage of below par shooting and passing, compounded by a lack of aggression defensively.
Although there was some encouragement with the individual performances of James Fry, Harry McDonald and Dan Alibone, the Jets were never troubled and won 50-25.
The side will hope to improve before their next two games against Plymouth and Bristol Flyers 1, both at Plymouth on February 9.
After the games, head coach Rick Wooldridge said: "With the Tigers giving way between one and two years in age and playing back to back games it was always going to be a tough trip against two of the better teams in the league.
"But I would like to highlight the input, effort and obvious development of James Fry who had two good games."
The squad and scorers for YMCA Torbay Tigers' two games were:
Joe Windsor (2pts), Sam Osborn (2), Dan Allibone (6), Lewis Cudd (5), Harry McDonald (0), Mat Roberts (4), James Fry (3), James Cartwright (6), Jamie Davey (0) and Otis Skitch (25).
