BUSKERS will be brightening up the streets of Torquay and Paignton as part of a range of events aimed at livening up the town centres.

A new Torbay Busking Festival is being launched at the end of April recruiting magicians, singers, dancers and performers with circus skills.

Torbay Town Centres Company is currently recruiting for the festival which will take place in Paignton on Saturday, April 28, and Torquay on Sunday, April 29.

Ian Broadfoot, chief executive of the company, said: "The aim of the festival is to bring something fun, unique and special to Torbay, helping to create a vibrant atmosphere and bring the community together."

The events kick off with an Easter egg hunt competition in the town centres — in Torquay from April 1 to 15, in Paignton from April 1 to 8.

Plans are also being laid for the Torquay Food and Arts Festival on May 4 and 5.

Winner Street will be holding a jubilee street party on Sunday, June 3.

On June 10 there will be the second Torquay Festival with street entertainment and live music in the central area.

There are also plans to bring in more continental and craft markets to Torquay and Paignton plus further events.

Why have buskers in april and june only though limited and I mean limited permits to busk all summer would add an attraction free of charge. Could have an area set aside for them.

Without the performing arts, a post-industrial society is nothing.... The Olympics opening ceremony demonstrated that quite effectively, I thought. Do you take requests, Busker?

Good luck to my best friend who is singing tonight at the Rainbow Hotel. As much as I would have loved to supported her, it was unfortunate that the last bus back to Totnes was at 8:05pm!

This is all very well and sounds very nice from the perspective of a local council, seen to be encouraging buskers, singers, musicians, but the local shops do not always like buskers like myself who sing well, and neither do the council or i wouldn,t be turned away so much......This is just a showby the council to make it seem like they care about the empty shops and letting people with no hope like myself show my talents...two faced and lacking integrity or genuine intent! It,s quite upsetting to be asked to move on after 20mins of making people happy singing, knowing that the cowards who report you just simply cant stand realy talented people like myself.
