TORQUAY United boss Chris Hargreaves has offered to buy a drink for every away fan who went to the defeat at Hartlepool, as part of a morale-boosting event this week.
Hargreaves said he ‘gave a couple of fans £20 to get themselves a pint on the way home’ after Saturday’s defeat, which left his side languising at the bottom of League Two.
“It was the least I could do,” said Hargreaves, who now wants to buy every supporter a drink this week – in combination with a Q&A at the Boots and Laces pub at Plainmoor on Wednesday (7pm).
A total of 91 fans made the journey to Victoria Road – a round-trip of almost 800 miles from Torquay – and saw their side match the hosts for chances and shots on target.
But the clinical finishing of Hartlepool meant they took the points.
Although many of those supporters would have been ‘exiles’ living outside of Devon, Hargreaves wants to reward the remainder for their effort.

Long-serving full-back Kevin Nicholson also spent time chatting to fans who stayed behind at Victoria Road on Saturday, and said it was all about reassuring them that every effort was being made to avoid the drop.
Hargreaves also said next Saturday’s home clash against Fleetwood Town would be an ‘FA Cup final’ for the team, and is looking for Samba dancers, drummers and possibly even a fire eater to raise the atmosphere.
