SOUTH DEVON community groups are abuzz after being offered the chance to win a share of a £25,000 cash for communities fund.

Entries are coming in from groups who could spend a share of the cash on their charitable activities in our Cash for your Community initiative.

Among them is Swim Torquay, the swimming pool in Plainmoor.

Spokesman Peter Tysoe said: "Swim Torquay welcomes this initiative and hopes to be involved in the competition to raise funds for the purchase of extra safety equipment.

"We hope other community groups will take advantage of this scheme, which is a welcome opportunity to raise funds in the present difficult financial situation."

The Herald Express is working in partnership with Western Power Distribution, which is offering the £25,000 fund.

Worthy causes which have been nominated for a share of the cash so far include:

The Chordettes ladies close harmony group in Newton Abbot, Friends of Brixham Library and Saltstone Caring in Kingsbridge.

Use the nomination form, printed in the Herald Express on Page 52 to nominate your favourite cause before February 11. Nominees will be sent an application form to be completed and returned by February 11.

A panel will draw up a shortlist of entries which will go out to the public to vote by collecting tokens for their favourite project or group in the Herald Express.

Community groups on the shortlist can walk away with up to £2,000 per group and the minimum amount will be £450.
