TORQUAY trio Matt Thompson, Nick Watkin and Matt Hickey are all in the Devon Lions XI for Sunday's game at North Devon CC to launch the David Shepherd Foundation.

Shepherd, who died last year after fighting cancer, played cricket for Devon and Gloucestershire prior to becoming one of the world's top umpires. He retired in 2005, back to the village of Instow where he first played for North Devon in the 1950s.

Devon CCC has set up the David Shepherd Foundation as a high-performance centre for players aged 17-21, although older players will be considered if they have the potential to play.

The Foundation, will play development games under the Lions XI banner. High-intensity training will be done at training weekends during the winter.

The Devon Cricket League are so impressed with the scheme they have donated £1,000 towards the running costs.

South Devon teams are well represented in the Lions side, which is playing a David Shepherd XI to mark the official launch.

As well as the Torquay trio, there are places for Paignton pair Seb Benton and Tom Field, plus Bovey Tracey's Andy Kingdon.

The Shepherd XI is being put together by Jack Davey, a former Gloucestershire and Devon team-mate who ran the Court Farm pub in Abbotskerswell for many years after retiring from the first-class game.

The probable Shepherd line up includes ex-Devon captains Nick Folland and Bob Dawson, former Somerset and England A keeper Rob Turner and Bovey Tracey's Chris Bradley.

Devon Lions XI is: D Bowser (North Devon, capt), M Thompson (Torquay), G Chappell (Bradninch),J Bess, Z Bess, L Bess (all Sidmouth), B Huxtable (Braunton), S Benton (Paignton), M Hickey, N Watkin (both Torquay), A Kingdon (Bovey Tracey), T Field (Paignton), R Acton (Bradninch).

David Shepherd XI (probable): N Folland (Exmouth), G Townsend (Heathcoat), R Davies (Tavistock), J Overton, C Overton (N Devon), C Bradley (BTracey), J Burke (Budleigh), R Turner (Weston), C Metters (Exmouth). W Murray (Sidmouth).
