TORQUAY were soundly beaten in a one-sided second half at Plainmoor.
York ran in three goals as the Gulls fell to pieces following an encouraging first half.
Loan signings Ade Azeez and Anthony O’Connor went straight into the Torquay United side for their Plainmoor debuts. Azeez stepped in for Callum Ball up front for the Gulls, while O’Connor joined Tom Cruise at centre back, replacing the injured Aaron Downes and ill Krystian Pearce.
Former Gull Ryan Jarvis was included in the York side, and received a warm welcome from the home fans.
There was plenty of attacking football from both sides in the first half, but few clear chances for either side.
Torquay managed just one shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, Jordan Chapell’s low effort from the edge of the box which was easy for York keeper Michael Ingham to gather.
The visitors fared little better, finding O’Connor and Tom Cruise in commanding form in the home defence, and keeper Martin Rice picking up any loose balls behind them.
Up front, Torquay gave the visiting defence plenty of work to do, with Karl Hawley involved in everything and Jordan Chapell looking lively. Azeez, too, was a constant thorn in York’s side.
York took the lead in the 53rd minute, moments after their keeper Michael Ingham had saved from Karl Hawley and Billy Bodin in quick succession. The Minstermen broke to the other end and Luke O’Neill provided the cross for Wes Fletcher to hold off a challenge by Tom Cruise and lash the ball past Rice from close range.
The visitors went further ahead after 66 minutes when O’Connor fouled Josh Carson 25 yards out. Carson took the kick himself and curled it over the wall and in at the near post despite Rice’s valiant efforts to keep it out.
Things got even worse for the Gulls after 72 minutes when Jarvis made it 3-0 to the visitors, stabbing the ball over the line from close range after Torquay had failed to clear a corner.
