These photos show that X Factor semi finalist Luke Friend has always been a born performer.

The 17 year old from Teignmouth appeared in many shows at his school, Coombeshead Academy, Newton Abbot.

He played Michael in the production of Billy Elliot, Fagin in Oliver and was recently in We Will Rock You before being whisked away to the X Factor contest

.His teachers praised him this week for his commitment to entertaining

"Luke has always been an extremely hard working pupil," said Andy Tyner, head of music at Coombeshead.

"This pretty much sums up his whole approach. He always wants to improve and never settles for mediocrity.

"He has a drive and ambition to be successful, but this is grounded in his attitude to improve and be the best performer he can be. Talent is such a small aspect of success and Luke is showing that real hard work, alongside real talent is what helps you to become successful. We are all so proud of his achievements and we are positive he will continue to work hard to become the artist he wishes to be."

Amy Stephens, head of Drama and Dance at Coombeshead,  is equally proud of Luke's achievements

."Luke has always had star quality about him since the moment I met him as the only boy in my small GCSE dance group and when I put on my first 'event' at Coombeshead ironically called the "Coombesfactor" where he won alongside his singing partner Beth Preston.," she said.

"They won a visit and live recording at the local radio station and it is now surreal to think he is being followed by millions worldwide.

"His attitude to work has always been superb putting everything into every bit of work he has ever done. He would sometimes worry me with his laid back attitude but then hand in or present a lovely piece of work.

"He never failed to deliver to expectation. For the school productions he was so reliable - a director's dream!- arrived on time, learnt his lines, knew his characters inside out although he did have a habit to ad lib and add lines here and there! I cannot describe how proud of him I am but for us he will always be Luke, the talented down-to-earth kid who works his socks off."See if Luke makes it to the final by watching the X Factor this weekend.

*Coombeshead Academy will host its Christmas Concert at the Bushell Theatre at the school on December 12. It starts at 7pm
