Barrington Road fire 1

SEVEN fire engines were called to a blaze at a holiday complex in Torquay on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters from stations in Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Newton Abbot and Totnes were called to the Muntham Luxury Holiday Apartments in Barrington Road at about 5pm.

They responded to reports of a storeroom blaze.

Guests staying at the holiday apartments were evacuated before firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the large detached two-storey property near the junction with Higher Warberry Road. The VEMA aerial platform was also at the scene but was not required.

Crews were still at the property at 6.30pm.

Gerald Taylor, fire accident group manager, said: "We've had a fire in the lower ground floor flat of this holiday let. The alarm sounded and everyone evacuated. Nobody has been injured.

"We can confirm the fire is now out and we are just making it safe.

"The fire was in a storeroom. There is fire damage to the lower ground floor flats and smoke damage above."

He said the cause of the blaze was not yet known but an investigation was underway.

Traffic is still moving freely in the area although crews expect to be at the scene for some time on Monday evening.
