The chefs of tomorrow

SOUTH Devon College's Horizons Restaurant has now reopened after its summer break.

Horizons is a training restaurant where it strives to offer customers a professional service within a structured learning environment.

Its interesting and varied menus are prepared and served by tomorrow's chefs, waiters and waitresses under the expert guidance of a first-class teaching team. This is the chance to spot the up and coming stars of the future.

From Mondays to Fridays, Horizons offers morning coffee and fresh filled ciabattas (10am – 11.15am); from Mondays to Thursdays from 12 noon to 1.20pm, a café menu with hot daily specials, and on Fridays between 12 noon and 1.20pm there is a delicious hot buffet lunch main course on offer for the very attractive price of £3.75.

For the whole fine dining experience, book for a lunchtime from Monday to Thursday for £7.75 to £8.95. There is a special promotion until November 30: three lunches for the price of two. Evening fine dining is available on Thursdays; three courses cost £15.50 – and that includes coffee. Up to December 7, the three-for-the-price-of-two promotion is available for evening dining.

Horizons' next major initiative is the launch of the South Devon College Mitch Tonks Seafood Academy on October 10; Mitch, award-winning restaurateur, food writer, chef and champion of seafood, will be enthusing students, apprentices and local chefs about buying, preparing and serving seafood with exciting new recipes and techniques.

Horizons staff and students will be hosting a 'pop-up' evening for Riverford Field Kitchens on Thursday, October 18. South Devon College students will prepare and serve under the management of Riverford Head chef, Rob Andrew. This event is already proving particularly popular so anyone interested in booking should contact Horizons on 01803 540442 as soon as possible.

Horizons is gearing up for Christmas, with Christmas lunches on offer from December 10 to 14 and from December 17 to 20. The cost for a Christmas lunch before the 19th is £11.50; for the 19th and 20th, it is £21.50.

Themed events planned so far for 2012-13 in Horizons include a 'Help for Heroes' fund raising buffet on Wednesday, November 7, a Valentines Evening on Thursday, February 14, and Afternoon Tea on Wednesday March 20.

On occasions there may be delays or changes to the dishes or service provided as it adapts to the needs of the learner and the curriculum. Horizons would ask for understanding when these circumstances arise. It always appreciate comments and feedback which is valuable for the learner's experience.

The hospitality and catering section offer both full and part-time programmes in food preparation, food and drink service, supervisory and management training as well as apprenticeships and other industry focused qualifications and short courses.
