TORQUAY United fans have really earned their stripes.

The Herald Express asked Gulls supporters to cast their votes in a poll to choose next season's first team home strip.

There were seven shirts to choose from, ranging from designs similar to the current all-yellow model to more radical blue and yellow creations and a retro-style striped shirt.

Hundreds of Gulls supporters voted using coupons from the Herald Express, emails to the club and votes in an online poll at our website www.thisissouthdevon.co.u

And it was Shirt G, the retro design of yellow and white stripes with blue trim, that scooped more than 50 per cent of the votes cast.

"We are delighted with the response to the shirt vote for next season," said United managing director Bill Phillips.

"To pool more than 1,600 votes between the Herald Express and our own online vote is truly incredible and indicative of how much fans care for their club.

"We have already ordered samples of Shirt G, the outstanding choice from supporters, and also Shirt C, which was runner-up.

"We are very excited to see how the shirt looks and feels in reality, and Torquay United would like to thank all fans for taking part in the voting process."

The new G design takes fans back to 1991, when then-chairman Mike Bateson produced a new strip for United's Fourth Division Play-Off campaign. United wore the yellow-and-white stripes and blue shorts through their successful post-season, which culminated in victory over Blackpool at Wembley, for the next two seasons and again briefly at the turn of the century.

DevonJanner, you have a very big gob, which you put your foot in regularly. Don't comment on things that you aren't blessed with the intelligence to understand.
